We live in ever changing times. Consider now that there are more individuals starting businesses than ever before.
According to the Government website, at the start of 2023 there were 5.51 million small businesses in the UK that equates to approximately 98% of the business population. They are the biggest employer in the UK.
Simply put, small businesses are important.
As a small family run business ourselves we understand the highs and lows of running a small company and wanted to share with you some of the reasons why it’s not just nice to purchase from a small business, its important too.
Most small businesses are formed because of a personal passion for a particular product or subject field. By purchasing from a small business, you are contributing to someone’s passion that in today’s often harsh world is reason enough.
How often have you bought from a large company and never once spoken to a person? Live chats, AI bots and emails responded to after a fortnight. Hardly a positive experience, right? Well, with a small business you will often speak to an actual human being. And if a phone line is not available you can be sure to receive an email response that doesn’t use the phrases “I didn’t understand that” or “type in a few words what your query is”.
In addition, you are more likely to find a standard landline number with a small business instead of the 0333 or 0345 numbers that large companies adopt that include a 12 step selection process and a 30+ minute wait to speak to someone. A small business will provide excellent personal service that you don’t and won’t get from larger companies. You are more likely to speak to the business owner of a small business. Let’s face it, how likely are you to have a personal one on one chat with the owner of Amazon?
Be it a pair of shutters, a louvre door, a wooden cabinet, an item of clothing or even a cup of coffee, you can be sure that the things you buy from a small business are made with love and pride. Like we said before, you are helping to make someone’s dream come true so you can be sure that the product you are receiving has been dusted with genuine love, care and attention.
The last point ties in nicely with our next point. You can be sure that a small business takes great pride in what they do. A small business won’t just want to sell any old rubbish to make a quick buck. Instead, they will take great care, time and money ensuring the product they sell is of the highest possible quality. After all, no one wants to put their name on a subpar product.
Small business helps to create local jobs. That means they keep people in work and contribute to someone’s ability to live their life and pay their bills. Small businesses often boosts the local economy. Consider that a customer has specifically visited a location with the aim of looking at and potentially buying a product from business. Well, during their time at said location they may wish to purchase a coffee, get petrol for their car or even stay overnight. All of these things help put money back into the local economy and also to other local business too!
Smaller businesses are exactly that – smaller businesses. That means they will produce less waste than a large company. They will also use less energy that means they doubly contribute to the environment.
A successful business will attract admirers. And what better way to encourage the youth of today than to see the rewards and benefits of running a small business.
We’re not saying you cannot trust a big company. But there is an extra level of trust you can put into a small business. Firstly, being able to associate a face with a business helps. As we mentioned before larger companies can often come across as ‘faceless’ or almost non-human so to be able to associate actual humans with a business provides a deeper level of trust. Business, after all is said, is about people. Everything else is just 4 walls, a roof and stock. Support small businesses over large where and when you can because you can be sure of getting that extra level of service that many of us complain has gone from modern society.
