Create a country cottage look on the exterior of your home – Part II

Article by

Continuing on from our first article, here is part II on creating a country cottage look on the exterior of your home.

1. Add a picket garden gate.

Create the ultimate entrance to your cosy country cottage by adding a picket fence gate. You can match the colour of your fence to your front door and even hang the door number or house name on the front. You’re already picturing Rosehill cottage from the movie ‘The Holiday’ aren’t you?

2. Flowers and creepers

Flowers and plants are the absolute pinnacle of creating a country cottage look; you will be hard pushed to find a cottage without at least one plant at the front. Popular flowers you could include in your garden include Roses, Lavender, Honeysuckle and Peonies. Gardeners World has a great article with some more inspiration on flowers and plants for your cottage garden. And if you want to create the ultimate cottage look – add a creeper plant or some wisteria to the façade of your house.  Stunning!

3. Light it up.

Another great way to create a cottage vibe is to add some lights to the mix. The great thing about garden lights these days is that most of them are solar powered so you won’t need to keep replacing batteries. Good for your pocket and for the environment! Try adding some solar string lights to your hedges or plants or add some lights either side of your pathway to create a walkway paradise. There are plenty of different style wall lights such as up light styles or station clock style lamps too. Or you could even try a light post lamp like this stunning one from GBS lighting.

4. Feed the birds, tuppence a bag.

Create a haven for local wildlife by adding some bird boxes or animal feeders. Better yet why not even add some bee boxes, bug boxes, water features and pollinators flowers that creates your very wild garden. Harry the hedgehog and Darryl the Dove will be grateful for your aptitude for combining style and nature.

5. Grown your own vegetables

Now you might reserve this kind of activity for the back garden rather than the front. But there’s certainly no law for growing vegetables in your front garden. Add a log roll border around your vegetable patch to accomplish that country cottage sophistication.
